war

How do you interpret the photo's argument regarding the Iraq war? When analyzing the argument, consider Heisler's choices for framing the shot, the camera angle, and the subjects and objects in the photo. Also, what images or features of people are visible, and what are not? How does this contribute to the argument?
I think that the picture is showing the hero's of today and that we should be grateful to them and honor them, but at the same time the pictures show the negative effects or war and how sad it can be. The picture from the book shows soldiers draping the American Flag on the coffin before take off, showing the fallin hero, but you can see the dispair of the people on the plane through the windows. The people look like they are just caught up in a picture, but some of them have a wary face on, like they are upset and they know what is going on in the plane below them. In the pictures from the blog, the children looking at the coffin are the focal point of one of the pictures. They are looking at the coffin looking sad; it could be their father or mother or someone else close to them, which is so upsetting. They are wearing little army uniforms and showing their respects to the fallin soldier. The bittersweet thing is that they could be the hero's of tomorrow and the next casualties of war.

Now, consider that you are going to include this image in an argumentative essay that you write. What types of arguments might you construct that would use this image as visual evidence? What other images or evidence would you use to develop your argument?
Create a caption for your chosen photo that demonstrates an argument or appeal. What argument are you trying to make by appending those words to your image? Did you incorporate logos, ethos, and/or pathos in your caption? If so, explain why your choices most effectively supported your argument

Bills Going 11-5
The big surprise coming out of Orchard Park this year is looking to be the Buffalo Bills, who are starting a record season so far by going 3-0; something not done since 1992. this season they have a fairly decent schedule, taking on Brett Favre and the Jets, New England, albiet no Brady, Derek Anderson and the elite receiveing core of the Cleveland Browns, and the potent offense of Phillip Rivers and Ladanian Tomlinson. Also, you never know from the supposed bad teams and when they are going to actually put forth their "A" game with a surprise come from behind win. The Miami Dolphins, who went 1-15 last year, started the season 0-2, but surprised the hell out the New England Patriots and went on to beat them 38-13, with Ronnie Brown rushing for four touchdowns on the supposedly tough as nails Patriots goal line defense. One team that I think that the Bills will totally dominate is the St. Louis Rams, who are on their way to a number one draft pick next draft season. Their receiving core is plagued with injuries, the ones in the game aren't worth their paychecks beacuse of no big catches, Steven Jackson isn't back to where he needs to be as a running back, Marc Bulger is Mr. Sacked Man, and the defense is being obliterated by every offense that comes their way; even the Seattle Seahawks demolished them! By the looks of it, the bills are shaping up to start 5-0, unless Kurt Warner and the Arizona Cardinals can upset them.
Let us look at the Cardinals shall we? They have gone the first two games this season without any turnovers, and what happens in week three?? They have two! Kurt Warner throws a pick and Edgerrin James, a new member of the 15,ooo+ yard career club, had a fumble. What is up with that? But underneath those mistakes lies a highly potent offense which could explode if Warner can get above the 200 yard mark for a game, which what happened in week two when he had 361 passing yards and a perfect passer rating. The Bills passer defense

steroidsss........

I was so shocked when I first watched this video, that I had to watch it again. I couldn’t believe that someone had been taking anabolic steroids for the past 40 years and looked great, and had no side effects. That is just crazy to think; especially since everybody makes such a big deal out of them. And even the DEA, AMA and NIHA opposed that steroid act passed by congress because they found minimal to no effects long term. No deaths, nothing to extreme in reference to any side affects; only a little acne and breast tenderness. Not too bad.
The video failed to address the effects that steroids could have on women and young children, say like highschool age or younger. What could happen to the young kids? They are still developing mentally and physically until the early 20’s, what effects would steroid have on their development.
I think that if used responsibly, steroids can be legal, but for people over the age of 30, and who are responsible. Also, maybe not sports people, because we pay them so much money for them to be good, not for steroids to do all the work for them. Just probably for weightlifters and people who want to get bigger. Definitely not for young kids, just responsible adults, since it has been working for older men for so long, with no side effects.

I think steroid testing in middle schools and high schools should definitely be mandatory. Those children are still developing and shouldn’t take steroids, for fear of long term effects that will screw up that development. Steroid testing should be frequent and random and be used to catch the kids who think it will be good for them. And for professional athletes versus young kids… I think that kids should be tested more, but professional athletes should be tested a lot too. We pay them millions of dollars for them to do the hard work and to put in the effort, we do not pay the steroids for doing their job. Steroids should only be sued by lifters and responsible adults who know what they are doing, if even they should be doing that. There doesn’t seem to be any long term effects that are bad for people, as according to the video, so it will be fine to use if you are responsible.
I do think that steroids have a little competitiveness associated with them, people take them and try to get bigger and faster, to be the best of the best. It is making people think that they should just use them to get bigger and to be the best, instead of using their own brawn and own will to do their best. Kids see how athletes are big and excel with what they do, and hear that they get busted and steroids are at fault. Kids think that is pretty cool and that it could work for them and decide to try it. What kid wouldn’t want to be the best, or be all-state and get scholarships to all the big colleges?

be a man and play with real toys

Ok… the first article seems a little crazy. It is saying that since like action figures first came out in the early seventies, or earlier, they have grown in size; bigger muscles, bulges, and insane attributes that young men think are cool. It is saying that kids these days are basing their whole life and physiques to how action figures look, and if they are bulky like they are then they do not have a cool factor and are wimpy.
The other article screams, ‘the other article is crazy!’ it is basically saying that people who think that children are basing their looks on dolls, instead of wrestlers or football players, is absurd.

The first article is basically all logos because it has so many numbers and factual information in it. It is serious and is trying to get the point that the new muscle action figures is bad for the emotional and physical health of young men. It is effective with presenting the numbers and using that evidence that the dolls are definitely bigger, but then again it all seems silly. It is just saying that dolls are contributing to the eating disorders of men, but doesn’t provide evidence on how those two things are related. I think that this article would go to scientific people and people who are against violence and action figures. Maybe like the worrier moms who do not like violence and want their kid sheltered from using their imagination and playing with the vamped up action figures.
The second article seems more real, just because of its ethos. Like it makes you think of the point that the article is trying to get across. It doesn’t need fancy numbers, just logic and basic thinking. Why would a kid base their perception on life on an action figure, instead of a football player or a wrestler? The audience for this article would definitely be the action figure population, to show that eating disorders aren’t their fault, and would go to the dads and soccer moms who want their kids to be real.

The first article I was like, ‘wow that is pretty crazy to think that kids base their lives and builds on a doll.’ It is sad if that is what really goes on in life, but I do not think that is what really happens. Cultural expectations for my gender say that you have to be a Barbie and just look hot all the time. I do not think that the male population has gone that far yet. I think they still are basing everything on their childhood hero and still have real perceptions on life. I used to play with power rangers with my brother, but I am not a big bulky pink lady now am I? My brother had big muscle action figures, which I thought were cool, but I did not want myself looking like that; my brother either. We pretended we were those action figures all the time, but we didn’t have to become them to have a great time. Also, I liked the American Girl, Molly, because that is what I got when I was little. I wasn’t a big doll playing person, but she wasn’t too bad; but I didn’t become her. She became me and I played out my life through her and my brothers toys.
My parents didn’t like us watching violent tv, especially wrestling or cops, but we snuck around and watched them still; I mean what kid doesn’t watch wrestling in the second grade? We pretended we were them or tried to rip out shirts open, but we didn’t think we should be hitting up the gym and lift until we were blue in the face, we were just normal kids living life. Now in the time period, I do like to go to the gym, but I like to just stay in shape and be toned. That is probably at the fault of society views on women, but I love the gym, it is very relaxing and it is fun to mingle with everyone there. I do not think I am the most feminine girl out there, I even just first got a manicure last Friday even, but I do not attribute that to playing with my brothers toys. It is just how I am, I love football, big hits by linebackers, I love action movies, but then again the Sex and the City movie is one of my favorites. I think kids should be able to play with whatever appeals to them and helps them grow up as a person, and not to worry if it is going to cause them to have an eating disorder down the road.

pro/con ana

I think that pro-ana sites should be shut down or highly regulated. it helps to fuel the thinking of eating disorders and helps people to see what others are doing and if it works for those people then it will be tried by the thosands of young women and men who read those articles. Clairegirl goes to all of the websites and sees others who have these goals for themselves and their strategies for losing weight to get to double digits. I do not think that is good because people who think about an eating disorder don't neccesarily act upon it; if they have fuel to add to the fire from ideas they see online or from things they hear at school and they see that they work then it will be like a hugh bon fire- totally out of control. I have thought about eating disorders before, what it would be like it I had one and how I would regulate them, even though I do not need to participate in one. I do to the gym about three or four times a week, sometimes more if I have the time; I think I do it just ot stay fit. People say I do not eat enough, but sometimes I think I eat too much. If I am around people who have an eating disorder and know what they are doing and I see that they lose 5-10 lbs easily and keep it off, I think I would definitely try it. I would then be back to freshmen in high school weight, not healthy for what I should be now. Anyways, I think that when people see it and are around the results of eating disorders they will actually try it and act upon it, over if they just think about it and let that thought pass. With all these websites lingering around, it is just a way for young people to start. It's not right, but people have to be like a perfect weight to be totally accepted in life these days. You could have a super personality, but if you have like an extra 20 pounds on you, people will notice and they will think about it- it's just a human thing that happens. That and these websites put together and bad combination that equals a lot of sickness.

I think these websites should stay up because it provides a support system for young girls and guys who have these disorders. Without and support and help or others, these young people could be spiraling out of control with their disorder and have no regulations on what they do. If they are fighting the ED by themselves and have no one to talk to, I think it could be fatal for them. If there is a support group, then I think that they will have ways to help over come the disease and fight it. Yeah, they will also tell you how to lose all that weight and how to get skinnier, which is bad, but if you have someone to talk to I think that your emotional state will be better than if you didn't. If you find the right sites that help you try to exit that kind of life, then you will be more likely to seek medical attention ahd help and to try and save your life. Again, Clairegirl was searching these sites and found her support group and is finding out ways on how to limit herself, but I think that she will do it safetly and not as much weight. I believe she said she just wanted to do ten pounds at the most, and still be in her ideal weight for her height- I think that is a good goal to reach, and that should be her limit. But it needs to be done with other people so it can be regulated and not get out of control, that is why the websites are a good idea and how they can help people lose the weight and be as safe as they can, even though the ED's aren't such a great idea in the first place.

Running....

My initial reaction to this was ad was, 'that sounds pretty creepy, but kinda cool too.' Like I have always thought about stumbling upon a random body and then leading the police back to it, only because I now live in the country (when i am back home) and there seems to be nuimerous places where someone could stash a body. Anyways, the element that stood out to me the most was the bold white text at the top. it made me think to CSI and all the other crime shows that portray that. The sneakers at the bottom, the image, appealed to me too because one was lopsided and i was thinking maybe its a PSA trying to warn people about weirdo people and not to get murdered? Sounds silly, but thats what I had thought at first.

I used to be an avid runner so i was like that is true. I used to run on pathways in the woods, when not in the streets. But I think i was one of the babies in running because when it was raining out I never wanted to go on a run, maybe because i get sick a lot and my mom put the fear of God into me everytime i tried because she was sick of hospitals. Anyways i knew about how some runners felt about joggers and that they aren't as great and always take the nice clean cut routes. My neighbor is a runner now and she likes to run all the time, even in the rain, and thinks that people are whimpy being all slow and just running in a crisp 72 degrees with a light breeze weather.

this ad pulls people in right away with a black background and the bold white letters at the top. I mean how could you not look at something like this? Plus, you have the sneakers all sprawled out, you have to know what happened to those sneakers and what the message is they are trying to convey. Also, the style of writing they use is pretty intense. They are like chastizing joggers for being more 'whimpy' and for not helping to solve America's murders. They are thanking and praising runners for being the true athletes for going out there in the elements and doing their civic duty. I think she is promoting hard work and labor to get up in the morning everyday and running hard. I htink she is saying joggers arent disciplined enough for that and is saying they could be with these new sneakers to try to convince them. Spend $150 on me and maybe ill help you get up too.

I think that she is attracting more runners with this ad, but she is also alienating joggers. I would think that i am more of a jogger than a runner now, so i feel a little eh about this ad. But i do run/jog where no one really goes [if i go missing search random pathways of earlysville, va ;)] so i dont find any offense in it. but i also think that there is a chance that she will sway joggers into becoming runners, i mean i think it would be cool (kinda sick) to find a body one day, and i do not think that i am the only one in the world thinking that. She could be brining incentive to people, the excitement of running where no one has woven a path yet, just seeing new things each day. You need really rugged shoes for that, so i think that her sales will go up. I wouldn't buy them though... I think my sneakers now are super fab for running anywhere anytime.

Well, logos appeals to me, as well as ethos. It evokes a lot of emotion, mean spiritedness because i am not running super fast all the time, but also wonder and excitement because I could be finding a body somewhere! I mean she is like everyone should go out and run on a slope in the mountains or a ravine and they will be a hero. It's like false hope and excitement. Not that you should hope to find a body, that is wrong, but maybe you will see a bear or it will chase you and then you will be conditioned enough to kick it into high gear and run away from it really fast! I am not sure joggers would be able to... Anyways logoes because of the logic of saying runners have more excitement, i think they do. They run in all sorts of weather and they can find cool things and they are more ready for anything that comes their way. Joggers just have kids in the park and snow cones for when they are thirsty.
